Choosing the Width of the Mount

Don't do This.  This is the 8x12" image in a 1.2"/3CM mount.  Everything looks stuffed into the Frame.  The mount with is about 1/2 the minimum ut should be. This is the "Bought at The Checkout Look" that your neighbours have.

Start Here. The Mount is 0.25 (1/4) x  width of longest side of the art Work.  Things are looking better already..

Once mount is wider than 1/4 of the longest side, you can keep going.

General Framing Tips

A frame without a mat provides a more modern, minimalist look.

A weighted bottom adds an elegance and sophistication to any piece, while giving it a truly custom look (even with a simple white mat).

A neutral top mat (white/grey) with a colorful bottom mat is an easy way to add a splash of color and it focuses attention in on the artwork.

Double white mat - an easy and affordable way to make your piece look more expensive and substantial.

Choosing mats that are 2 different shades of the same color is a really easy way to pick a great-looking double mat.  For example, having a light blue top mat and a dark blue bottom mat.

Colors that look good together in real life (red/blue, green/blue, purple/green) will look good together as a double mat..
